Hurricanes and Education

On this morning’s commute from LA, I listened to today’s episode of Democracy Now, which focused on Puerto Rico in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria.  The devastation “boggles the mind.”   Learning the details of the crisis, I reel, wondering how to maintain focus on my work — including Plato’s Republic — today, when such emergent crises are unfolding.

Thanks to Remy for posting about how, after the hurricanes, there will be schools.  While our class aims to open out into so-called “philosophical” ideas about education, Remy’s post reminds me that the questions we are grappling with have real world consequences.  Check out Remy’s blog post for links to stories about what happened in New Orleans after Katrina and why Houston is taking a different path.
